Antigua – The modern Guatemala

Chicken bus ole! We cant get enough of them. They are so interesting, funny, beautiful and annoying at once. The second chicken bus we took was another new record of people in it. It was quite a small one with 38 seats – we counted 90 – 100 people in it. You really cant take these buses if you are claustrophobic. Sqeeeeeeze.

We arrived into the hotel we booked ahead and got lucky, instead of dorm room we got a private one for the same price. From the roof top you can see the three volcanoes surrounding Antigua with 3800 m peaks. One of them is active – sometimes more, sometimes less.

The city is pictured perfectly, a beautiful Central Park with a big cathedral in the back, square streets with small colorful houses in the colonial architecture. On every turn you discover another half or totally collapsing church or cathedral.

In the morning I took Spanish lessons and after that we walked through the packed city, full of purple dressed people.

Semana Santa, Antigua

This was the craziest and maybe best Easter I ever celebrated. Its probably the first time that I didn’t search for eggs and sweets in the garden. This time I had the History of Jesus wandering around the streets. The Holy week.

Hundreds, or maybe thousands of people dressed in purple robes, carrying huge sculptural images of Jesus Christ’s Crucifixation ( and the other events connecting him ) from churches through the streets. Every procession takes about 6 – 8 hours! The streets are covered with long, colorful carpets made out of sawdust, flowers and fruits.

They are beautiful – it takes a long time to prepare them before they walk over it with their massive sculptures. It is incredible. For days we could watch them. Even nights. One night all the cathedrals and churches were open which gave it an even more mystic feeling…

During the evenings we walked through the city to catch some Ice cream – like every day :) I love Ice cream.
There are lots of beautiful restaurants and Bars hidden in the spanish houses.
The market feels like a separate City, so huge. So many fresh fruits! Yummie.
IT is a fantastic city, I really liked it a lot.
