AUSTRALIA - LAND OF THE CONTRASTS

Why Australia? – everybody is asking..
well it´s far away, maybe that´s why.
It has the most incredible landscapes caped on one big island.
A dream will come true.
I don’t wanna live in a dream, I wanna live the dream.
And it´s the right time to leave… nothing to loose, just a ticket in my hand I am sitting for the first time in a big plane, on the way to Australia. Without knowing where I will end.

Sydney, Oct. 2006

Just wow. That’s what’s in my mind, I’ve never seen such a beautiful city before. Well, that’s maybe not hard – living in eastern Germany all my life but hey, its like landing behind the wall, with so much green , exotic birds flying around, amazing beaches on every corner filled with the most easiest going people I ever met. So many new things to discover, and don’t know where to start..
Maybe with a place to stay for a while. Sydney’s eastern suburbs where just amazing, but way to expensive for me.. I found a nice place in Northbridge with an old “house dragon” inclusive but its very cheap so I stayed here for a while.. always waiting for the bus. Sometimes they come, sometimes they don´t.
My first bus, for sure, was to the opera house. Because that´s the moment when u realise – it´s true, I am in Sydney !

And I found my new favourite place, behind the opera house, the big royal botanic garden. The trees are 10 times older then the city, so many cockatoos and full of places to relax. In the background u see the big, but beautiful skyscrapers and hundreds of flying foxes. Amazing.

Northbridge, Sydney

Living with different nations is quite fun. We enjoy our domestic animals , the stinking bushtail Possums in the old chimney ( in the kitchen area ) , the big huntsman spiders with her 101 Baby´s ( very exciting while u are sitting on the toilet and the 16 cm mum crawls underneath the door towards you ) tons of Red-Back spiders under every table and chair outside ( who can kill u if they want ) 2 lovely cats (they really are ) and our big house dragen ( our old landlady ). I love it – really I do!

Having no experience with washing clothes – doesn´t matter here, only cold washing and the hungry 1000 year old washing maschine was regulary eating one of my trousers.
Time to wear skirts ;)
On my first night out I met a new friend, Anja. We crashed a lot of party´s and clubs in Sydney. They know how to party and I love the famous house party´s over here.

Bondi Beach

The famous Bondi beach is in a perfect location, close to the city and full of backpackers and surfers. Its beautiful but very crowded and surfers surf over surfers. Here u can be how u want to be, don’t need to dress up for the pubs. Party mad and long.

I always thought we german´s are good in drinking, but hey, u haven´t seen the Australians yet. Gosh, they drink a LOT.
If we start midnight, they are usually drunk @ 10 pm. If u are going out in the city, where all the posh people are partying, u see beautiful womans, dressed up like on a catwalk, so drunk that they lie under table or on the table, before midnight.
That´s maybe why the tap water is free.

While searching for work as a vet nurse, I discovered the city. Around the corner of my place is balmoral beach, a beautiful place with amazing houses and beaches, pictures perfectly together.

The Rocks – the oldest part of Sydney, full of small streets and old houses. A beautiful place in front of the big skyscrapers and the harbour. It’s the place where the first settlers arrived and if u think 200 years is old for a city – u feel a little bit history.

After weeks of searching for work I had a few interviews but apparently they all had problems with my visa. Why that if I have a WORK & travel visa and if I have all the qualifications they wanna have? Its kind of depressing so I am convinced of being overqualified and they are scared of having a very good vet nurse. That makes me feel better.

Bronte

Houseparty´s everywhere, they just find a motto, invite a few friends and they bring hundreds of other friends – nobody cares. Last week we had a party in bronte with 300 people in two small houses. They just ripped out the fence, had a band on the roof of the garage and people dressed as superheros. Awesome.
