Fraser Island - largest sand dune on earth

Rainbow Beach

After passing by Bundaberg and get bored in Hervey Bay, we decided to move on to Rainbow Beach.
It´s an amazing beach with sand walls in the background and they seam to have lots of colours. We walked a way through a wood and came out at a beautiful place, a huge sand dune with a wall drop deep down to the beach and blue water. To lazy to walk the way back so we tried to climb up the sand wall, wasn´t easy to grip a stone which melt if u touch it. Tricky sandstone. We nearly lost our lives (we thought) and were happy to have ground under our feet’s again. The beach here is used as a shortcut to noosa for 4 wheeler so its quite busy during low tide.

Fraser Island

What a trip, u only can travel the island with an 4 wheel drive, so we couldn´t use our Wiked Camper and had to take a tour.
The cheapest way is to share a car with 10 other people, they just throw you in the car, giving u some maps and lets go. Quite a big chaos u can imagine but it was very fun and the island is incredible. We had 3 days and the main road here is the beaches. If u are driving its hard not to crash in the sea or get sucked in the sand. If u sit in the back u are bouncing around like a hopper and hitting the roof with your head. (even me ;) )

We camped somewhere in the woods encircled by huge trees and cooked a nice dinner for us all. We had to sleep in tents, but anja and me where just lazy (or smart?) and slept in the car.

It started to rain a lot so everybody joint us in the morning to complain about the leaky tents, he he.

We took our way on the eastcoast, miles and miles on the beach. Sometimes u have very deep wash outs and nearly flip over the car, and sometimes u have to share the beach with aircrafts. In this case, u have to give the way.

Unfortunately u cant swim in the ozean because of a regulare attendance of tiger sharks but the island has some amazing colourful lakes on it where u can take a bath.

Lake McKanzie

The beach sand is nearly pure silica and pure white.

Lake Wobby

Lake Bansin

Camping somewhere on the beach, not hoping that the flood will wash our tents away, we cooked noodles with ocean water and drank a lot while playing the ring of fire…. No more comments necessary I guess J

I woke up in the morning, totally wet (?) and wondering how messy our place looks like. Normally u have to put all your stuff, and mainly the food, on the car because of the dingo’s everywhere. But it was just a mess so we cleaned while the others where still sleeping deeply after a wild night.

Quite funny to see all of us in the car, having a hang over, but all seem very excited to reach the highlight, Indian Head.

Indian Head

This place Is just magic. On top u have an incredible view over the beaches, dunes in the background and the ocean where u can see all kinds of animals. Turtles, sharks, ray´s.. just unforgettable. I wish we could have some more time but we had to hurry a bit to catch our ferry in the afternoon.

Maheno Wrack, Fraser Island

Right on the beach, it once drifted ashore in 1935.

We finally made our way back, punctual on the ferry and glad that we made the trip. Next time we will have our own car, to stay as long as we want to but for this time it was fantastic.
